This piece uses syncopation to put the strumming to the offbeats. If you’re new to syncopation, take a look at the following figure:
Instead of counting “1-2-3”, break each beat up so that you are counting “1-e-&-a 2-e-&-a 3-e-&-a”.
Keep your hand moving up and down to your new subdivided rhythm, and strum on the “&-a” sub-beats.
In the recording, I also use a muted strum (a chk) on the beat.
